DESCRIPTION: OxyContin is the brand name of a drug that contains oxycodone; a very strong narcotic pain reliever similar to morphine. Designed so that the oxycodone is slowly released over time thus allowing it to be used twice daily, OxyContin should never be broken, chewed, or crushed since this causes a large amount of oxycodone to be released from the tablet all at once, potentially resulting in a dangerous or fatal drug overdose. When used properly, OxyContin can help relieve pain that is moderate to severe in intensity in such cases as terminal cancer. However, its illegal use has become an epidemic in many areas of the country, most notably in Appalachia. As of July 2001, at least thirteen suits have been filed in several states across the country against Purdue Pharma and Abbott Laboratories, the manufacturers and sellers of Oxycontin. |
